We are a registered Charity, and part of the City of Sanctuary network, which includes over 125 groups throughout the UK. We promote an environment of understanding and compassion for refugees, asylum-seekers and new migrants. We work closely with regional and national institutions and places of education, including support for Universities of Sanctuary and Schools of Sanctuary. At a grassroots level, we support individuals and families who find themselves in York unable to return to their countries of origin. York City of Sanctuary works within York and the wider Yorkshire region.
York is a City of Sanctuary and the UK’s first Human Rights City. Over hundreds of years, its history has criss-crossed with many cultures, from the Romans to the Vikings, to the cosmopolitan York of today. Since 2016, our charity York City of Sanctuary has played a vital role in supporting and welcoming people who find themselves needing to build a new life.
We have a dedicated Board of Trustees and an active team of volunteers, and we welcome new ones.
We can only do what we do thanks to our incredible supporters. If you can donate, please do so here:
